Chicama is known as the longest left wave in the world. The entire spot is two and a half miles long, divided into three sections:
Malpaso: the first section, far outside, breaks for about 150 meters.
Keys: breaks for another 600 meters before ending in deep water.
Main Point: main section compared to Jbay’s wave, Supertubes.
When the waves are more than six feet, Main point connects with the El Hombre section, where the waves break all the way to the pier in town-a 2.5-kilometer ride that goes on for minutes. The record for surfing tricks on the same wave was made here in Chicama, with more than 50 tricks on the same wave.
There is no shortage of variety of spots, beach breaks and points such as Pacasmayo, Poemape’ and Huanchaco, suitable for all levels from beginner to pro surfer.
SPOT CHICAMA AREA
Chicama Chicama stretches for two and a half miles and is divided into three sections: the first, located offshore, is called Malpaso and stretches for about 150 meters. The next, closer to the city, is called Keys and stretches for another 600 meters before ending in deep water. Finally, there is the main section, known as Main Point. When the waves exceed six feet, Main Point connects to the El Hombre section, where the waves crash down to the town pier, resulting in a 2.5-kilometer run. |
Pacasmayo North of Chicama is a very long left pointbreak. The point itself stretches for about 4 km, but the best waves in the upper part of the bay usually travel 300-400 meters. This spot catches a large amount of swell and is characterized by powerful, fast, tubing waves that can reach up to 500 meters (or more, if you are lucky). |
Poemape North of Chicama, Puemape is an exposed spot with a mix of beach break and reef break that offers very consistent waves. Ideal winds come from the northeast. The spot features a left breaking reef and is rarely crowded. |
Huanchaco South of Chicama, Huanchaco is a very long pointbreak of about 500 meters, divided into three sections. It catches a large amount of swell, making it a good alternative when Chicama is too small. It is a spot suitable for all levels of surfing. You can also try surfing here with the famous Peruvian canoes. |
