One of the main surfing bases in Costa Rica is Tamarindo. The long, beautiful beach in the center is perfect for learning to surf, and in addition there are spots for intermediate and advanced surfers nearby.The waves in the area are among the best in the world, as evidenced by the many international surfing competitions held here each year. The beautiful beaches are famous for the consistency of the waves, and Tamarindo is a perfect starting point for beaches and waves along the coast.

Minimum temperature: 23 degrees
Maximum temperature: 33 degrees
Water temperature: around 28 degrees C. No wetsuits are necessary. Dry season: January to May, November and December. Wet season: from May to October
Great Swell
April through October, but clean wave season is December through April, when swells from deep bass reach the Pacific coast with offshore winds. Typically morning waves are combed by off shoreo winds and afternoon by light offs hore, be sure to get up early to get those classic glassy sessions.

Playa Grande A large, beautiful beach north of Tamarindo that boasts solid, consistent waves. It is more of an intermediate and advanced spot with fast breaking waves, but it also has numerous peaks so you can stay away from the crowds. | ![]() |
Playa Langosta Just south of Tamarindo, this wave is pretty powerful and can be really fun at high tide. There are a lot of rocks and currents at this spot, so be sure to be cautious when surfing here. | ![]() |
Playa Avellana A wonderful beach with waves that can be surfed from beginner to advanced intermediate depending on the swell. There are several spots for all tastes here, including the famous Little Hawaii. | ![]() |
