The best season for surfing in this area of the southern atolls(Gaafu Dhaalu/ Huvadhoo) is from February to May and from September to November. There are many spots to explore in this area.Being a totally south-facing atoll, it has a double exposure to the southeast and from the southwest.
This guarantees significantly more sessions than in any other surf zone in the Maldives. The swells here are more powerful and take more force than in the atolls further north…many compare the waves in this area of the Maldives with those of the Mentawais Islands in Indonesia, in quality and power.
Also ideal for intermediates: there are more interior spots that take less force, such as Love Charms or Two Ways.
However, wind is an important factor affecting wave quality and needs to be analyzed: a guide is essential to be able to choose the right spot each session and enjoy an unforgettable surf.
Once you arrive in Male you need to fly south where our guide will pick you up at Gaafu Dhaalu airport. Nearby there are 8 breaks waiting for you and many unfamiliar spots in the passes further north. Here, due to the conformation of the islands, there is an incredible variety of spots: you will find from soft wave from long to treacherous reef and tubing waves.
Depending on the wind direction, our experienced guide will choose the right spot. Sessions last an average of 3h, you will have waves to feed even the most avid surfer with 5/6h of surfing a day.
Spot Area South Atolls
Blue Bowls Protected from winds Blue Bowls is one of the most surfable waves. Perfect with medium swells from the SE or big swells from the SW in westerly winds. Surfable in all tides, it is an accessible wave for everyone up to 3-4ft, from 5 and up only for pros. It has 3 fast sections, be careful not to surf it all the way down otherwise you will be part of the Vadhoo reef! | ![]() |
Five Islands Another massive right-of-way with a nice hollowed out inside, the outside has a take off with lots of water, but with significant swell it moves a nice amount of water, and with the S,SE wind picking up off shore it gives an inside section also tubing. Surfable from 2ft to 8 ft. It is another very consistent tubing spot | ![]() |
Two Ways This very indoor spot works only when there are at least 4/5 ft outside. As the name implies, it is a frame, where the right is generally better. Great option for intermediates in case of a big swell! | ![]() |
Love Charms One of the absolute best lefts in the South. Next to Two ways and not far from Five Island, it gives goofies incredible sessions. It tends to work best in the winter months ( Febb,March,Apr ) with N/NW/NE winds. It has 3 tubing sections for long, technical surf when in condition. With large swells and high tide the sections tend to connect. The scenery is also unique, often surfing with Dolphins and turtles and a picture postcard backdrop! | ![]() |
Tiger Stripes Between the islands of Gan and Gadhoo, Tiger Stripes is one of the most famous lefts in the South Atolls. It gets its name from the shape of the reef, which is striped like the skin of a tiger. It is a wave with swells up to 4/5 ft that is accessible to all, with long, shallow walls, but with an inside that digs in and, if you come in with the right speed, allows you to surf for over 150mt. With major swells the tiger burns and the inside becomes a dry, powerful tube. It is very consitent for its exposure for outside sections. Also ideal for intermediates. | ![]() |
Castaways Very fast and dry , this is a world class, right-hand wave. Suitable for experienced surfers with a fast take off that launches immediately into the tube to the end of the wave. Best to have shoes on. Breaks with swell mainly from SW and wind from N | ![]() |
Beacons Probably the most challenging wave on this atoll and among waves in all of the Maldives, considered the most powerful wave of all Maldivian passes. Up to 4 ft, while it is a very technical wave, it is quite accessible; above this size you need to know your way around well. The wave turns almost 90° with the last section leaving no room for a direct landing on the dry planking chock-full of coral. Surfable with all tides, this wave gives unique thrills for intermediate and advanced levels. It works with SW swells and N winds. | ![]() |
Antiques It is the wave that breaks on the opposite side of the Tiger Stripes channel. It is the best option when Tiger is off Limit , same consistency but half the strength. Similar to Two Ways, it has a right and a left. It works with all S swells between 2 and 6 ft. | ![]() |
