There is no doubt that Macaronis is one of the best waves on the planet. Although the perfect Macaronis wave is the main reason most people come to surf, there are many other waves to choose from, including some perfect alternatives for beginner and intermediate surfers. At Macaronis Resort, surfers of all levels can find exactly what they are looking for in surfing the Mentawai.
During your stay at Macaronis vedtra consistently 1 to 5 predominant swells pass this way. The swell goes from Medium Size ( fun and accessible wave for everyone ) to intense and suitable for experienced surfers.
When swells are of significant size we move to different, less exposed spots with a safe size for intermediate levels, leaving the deep tubes for more experienced surfers. Usually the peak swell lasts 1 to 3 days at most, leaving room for accessible sizes between swells.
Between March and November there is generally a continuous swell, making this peiod the best ever. It is also the time when Fish Finger, a spot for beginners , works best!
Between December and February you can usually find good quality waves and little crowding . On average the waves are head height about 2-3 feet.
MACAS The Macaronis wave, also called Macas, is a perfect left, considered one of the best performing waves in the world. In glassy and offshore conditions it guarantees a 4-6 second tube, while the inside is more like a skate ramp. It is a nice wave to surf even in onshore conditions . Its swell range is 2-8 ft. It works in all tides, wave type changes and sections. Swell direction SW but generally all those from the south. | ![]() |
GREENBUSH Another amazing wave is Greenbush, with a very wide and open left tube. It works with solid swells from the south, with a good high tide ( at least 1m ) and with wind from the east or northwest.Wave for experienced surfers, not so dug in the take off, and is a very photogenic wave. Generally March-June seems to be the best time. | ![]() |
SILABU LEFT Can be stewed in all tides. Most accessible wave even for those who don’t feel like surfing a tubing wave or who are first-time surfers on a reef break. Starts breaking with macaw at 3ft, and is often an uncrowded wave in these conditions! | ![]() |
MACAS RIGHT With swell from the south and winds from the north, with half tide rising questiona it becomes a spectacle of nature! Usually works well when Macas is also on fire, but it is often ignored, so it is often a lone wave! | ![]() |
MINI MACAS Inside by Macas is a perfect left, perfect for those looking for a wave less heavy than Macas. | ![]() |
BAT CAVES An alternative to the crowded swells is Bat Cave, a right hand break abutting a small desert atoll ( also very nice for a swim or snorkel ). It is very exposed , especially to western swells. In certain conditions it makes a not-so-great tube, but generally it is a long and accessible wave | ![]() |
RAGS LEFT A long left tubing wave, works with SW swells. Very variable depending on swell, wind and tide and when everything works best on this wave you won’t find many surfers, given its massive barrelling. It holds over 15 ft. | ![]() |
RAGS RIGHT The right is a no-stop pipe from start to finish. To be avoided at low tide, too shallow! It is one of the deepest tubes in the Mentawai | ![]() |
THUNDERS One of the most consistent spots at Mentawai at all tides. At high tide the wave has a cooing section to the decidedly dry inside very close to the island. It’s a great alternative when it’s not too big! | ![]() |
ROXIES Fun Right also called Macas Reverse for perfection and fun. A ca 45-minute speedboat ride from the resort, it’s a great option when the desire for the right rages on! | ![]() |
REDNUHT Solid right hander that breaks in deep water. Not very long, but definitely adrenaline-pumping for the hollow tube. | ![]() |
