Sri Lanka’s east coast has excellent spots for both beginners and intermediate or experienced surfers because of the quantity and quality of waves. Best period from April to October.
Arugam Bay is a world calss wave, suitable for everyone from beginners to professionals.
The area is dotted with right points, some still secret spots. There are reef breaks, break points and beach breaks surrounded by wilderness and natural parks in the area.
The southeast coast of Sri Lanka is affected by the same swells as the Indonesian coast, the most consistent season with swells from the SW is during Apr-Oct.
Expect 2-6ft waves with regular off-shore winds and clean conditions. Water temperatures are 27c / 82F year-round, so always shortboard!

Arugam Bay – Main Point The most famous spot on Sri Lanka’s east coast. Right point break with waves up to 600 meters long, with perfect sections for maneuvering and even tubing on the right days. Wave breaks on flat reef bottom, spot suitable for intermediate and advanced. | ![]() |
Arugam Bay – Baby Point Starting in June-July, when the sand covers the last section of Main Point, this perfect wave for beginners and intermediates forms, which is technically a continuation of the Main Point wave at Arugam Bay. Here the reef bottom is covered by sand. | ![]() |
Pottuvil Point One of the best waves on the entire coast. Works best during August-September, when waves can reach 800 meters in length and alternate between steep, fast sections and softer ones. Spot suitable for all levels, the inside is definitely quieter and sandy bottom. | ![]() |
Whiskey Point Very mellow right point, suitable for beginners and intermediates. Sand bottom and very soft waves, perfect for surf school. | ![]() |
Elephant RockPoint right on sand, with a nice take off that can create some tubes at the start and the rest of the wave very soft. Except for the first section, recommended for experienced surfers, the rest of the wave is suitable for all levels. | ![]() |
Peanut Farm Right Point very much resembles the Arugam Bay wave, with precisely a Main Point with fast, tubular waves for experts and intermediates and a Baby Point continuation with softer waves for beginners. | ![]() |
Okanda Forty-five minutes south of Arugam Bay, we find the last legally surfable wave in the area. High-quality right point with tubing sections. Sand bottom, suitable for all levels. The road to this spot is very scenic. | ![]() |
